“G, your rank smells terrific.” That’s the thought likely percolating in hardcore Monster Hunter fans’ minds as Capcom announced a new quest rank and a host of other shiny new features as part of is “Monster Hunter World: Iceborn” DLC expansion.
![Monster hunter world dlc schedule Monster hunter world dlc schedule](/uploads/1/2/6/2/126227572/824806346.jpg)
A step up from the series’ high-rank difficulty, “G Rank” traditionally represents the highest difficulty in Monster Hunter, boasting creatures with sturdier defense, higher attack and new tricks up their sleeve. These tougher monsters also come with the opportunity to craft stronger armor and gear to help hunters deal with the now stronger threat.
Although the reveal trailer didn’t specifically blurt out the words “G Rank” and simply goes on to state that the expansion will come with “a new quest rank,” the official Capcom Unity blog confirms that it refers to “a new quest difficulty rank.” Unless Capcom is planning to introduce a new rank altogether, G Rank is the only logical difficulty level to add based on the history of the series. Monster Hunter World Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto also specifically mentioned the series’ “G” or “Ultimate” variants when describing the size of the Iceborne expansion.
Perfect 10: Monster Hunter World is literally a game changer | Technobubble Reviews
On that note, here are the key things that we know so far about Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.
- Lord of the fall: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will be coming out in autumn 2019. Hopefully, that’s enough of a gap to allow the expansion to launch simultaneously on consoles and PC so no one gets left behind (or delayed).
- Now you will pay: The Iceborne expansion will be paid DLC and will require having a copy of the original Monster Hunter: World. Having to pay money makes sense as old G-Rank titles used to be sold as fully priced, separate games due to the additional content they provide. The main difference is that this expansion will be delivered as DLC instead as opposed to a new game release. The question now is pricing. If the DLC costs less than $59.99, then it represents a discount for owners of the original game since they don’t have to buy a separate full-price title like before. It will be more expensive for newcomers, however, since they have to pay for the original game and the DLC instead of buying just the G Rank version, which used to come with content from the original base game (that is, unless Capcom releases a new pack or special edition that has both, but there’s no confirmation of that yet). Personally, I have no issues with G Rank as paid DLC, especially given all the free content Capcom has offered since Monster Hunter: World’s release.
- Stay awhile and listen: The Iceborne expansion will come with a new story that kicks off from the ending of Monster Hunter: World. It’s basically a direct continuation of the expeditionary force’s story.
- Maps of the problematique: Although the trailer only showed a new ice stage, it also indicated that the Iceborne expansion will come with new “locales.” In case you’ve noticed, that’s plural, meaning there should be other new maps included as well.
- More monsters: Just like locales, the announcement also mentioned that the expansion will feature more new monsters, too. As a sneak peek, they showed one with glowing red eyes that trail in the dark, which is pretty much the calling card of Nargacuga.
- More equipment: This is pretty much a given for any Monster Hunter expansion. In addition to G Rank versions of weapons and armor, the game will also feature new gear from the new monsters.
- Makin’ moves: This part of the announcement is something a find intriguing. It’s a bit vague so it leads to some speculation. Are they talking about monster moves or hunter moves? Personally, I expect to see both. As far as hunter moves, though, are they talking about new base moves for the weapons or the addition of “hunting arts” or even hunting styles as seen in Monster Hunter Generations and Generations Ultimate? If it’s the latter, it would literally be a game changer, though the work and balancing it would require likely makes it, well, unlikely.
On that note, that’s all the information available for now about the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion. Expect the next oh-so-tasty update, including pricing information, during spring 2019, Tsujimoto said.
